How To Download Office 365 On Mac

Office 365 is a subscription-based service that provides multiple options for accessing the newest versions of Microsoft Office. Office 365 includes Office 2016 for Windows and macOS, cloud-based Office Online apps, and mobile apps for your smartphone or tablet. The service is free to all IU currently enrolled students, and all faculty and staff. You can install it on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and five phones.

The subscription entitles you to use the software as long as you have an active IU computing account. Unlike a perpetual license, you are not entitled to use the software after you leave IU.

How To Download Office 365 For Students On Mac

Features

Office 365 includes:

  • Office 2016 for Windows and macOS: The newest desktop versions of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Office Mobile apps: Scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Microsoft Office for your smartphone or tablet
  • Office Online: Cloud-based versions of popular Microsoft Office apps
  • Microsoft OneDrive at IU: 5 TB of personal cloud storage; for more, see About Microsoft OneDrive at IU.
Some Office 365 features will not be used with Indiana University's deployment of Office 365.

Access Office 365

To access Office 365, from a supported web browser, go to https://office.iu.edu. At the first prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

Office 365 offers several options for accessing Microsoft Office applications:

  • Office 2016: Office 2016 is the current desktop version of the Microsoft Office suite, available for Windows and macOS. Office 2016 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Skype for Business, Access, and Publisher; however, Access and Publisher are available only in the Windows version. By default, the Windows Office 2016 installation is 32-bit, which UITS recommends.
    • Install 32-bit for Windows:
      1. To download the installation package, click Install Office apps, and then click Office 2016. Optionally, before clicking Install Now, you may safely uncheck the options Make Bing your search engine and Make MSN your browser homepage.
      2. Run the downloaded installation package and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Install 64-bit Office 2016 for Windows:
      1. From the Office 365 home page, click Install Office apps, and then click Other install options.
      2. In the version information, click Advanced, and then, from the drop-down menu, select 64 bit.
      3. Click Install.
    • Install Office 2016 for macOS:
      1. To download the installation package, click Install Now.
      2. Run the downloaded installation package and follow the on-screen instructions.
      3. After installation, open any Office 2016 application and click the button to sign in.
      4. At the first prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.
      Office 2016 for Mac does not include Skype for Business. To install Skype for Business on a Mac, use IUware.

    To keep Office 2016 activated, you must sign into your Office 365 account at least once every 30 days:

    1. From any Office 2016 application, choose Sign In at the top right.
    2. At the first prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

    To access Office 365 services from within a Office 2016 application, you must sign into your Office 365 account.

  • Office Online: The Office Online suite allows you to create and edit files using lightweight, web browser-based versions of Microsoft Office applications. The Office Online apps include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft OneNote. Click any app to launch it in your browser.
  • Office Mobile apps: The Office Mobile apps are scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft OneNote. To get Office Mobile apps:
    1. Download the Microsoft Office apps you want from your device's app store.
    2. After installation, open an app and click the button to sign in.
    3. At the first prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

      • Departmentally owned computer (which requires activation every 180 days):
        Windows
        IT staff can download and install from the Campus Software Library > Microsoft for UW-owned Computers > Microsoft Office for Windows Shared Machines (C2R Installers) > Office 2019 Pro Plus for Kiosks.
        Mac
        IT staff can download and install the Office 2019 installation package from Microsoft, then download and run the serializer from the Campus Software Library > Microsoft for UW-owned Computers > Microsoft Office for Macintosh > Volume License Serializer for Office 20xx for Mac.
      • Personally owned computer: use a free office suite such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice as a backup.
  • Note - Windows 7 End of Support and Office 365 ProPlus

    • As announced previously, Windows 7 will be out of support after January 14, 2020. Because Office 365 is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy, customers are required to stay current as per the servicing and system requirements for the product or service. This includes using Office 365 ProPlus on a Windows operating system that is currently in support.

      Using Office 365 ProPlus on older, unsupported operating systems may cause performance and reliability issues over time. If your organization is using Office 365 ProPlus on devices running Windows 7, we strongly recommend your organization move those devices to Windows 10.

      [How does this impact me?]

      Even though Windows 7 will no longer be supported after January 2020, we understand Office 365 customers may need more time in their migration to a supported operating system. Through January 2023, Microsoft will provide security updates for Office 365 ProPlus on Windows 7. But, during that time, as long as the device is still running Windows 7, Office 365 ProPlus won’t receive any new features updates.

      [What should I do to prepare for this change?]

      We recommend that organizations migrate to Windows 10 or a supported operating system before the end of support date on January 14, 2020 in order to continue receiving new feature updates to Office 365 ProPlus. Make sure to discuss this process with your local IT staff before making changes to your system.

      We’ll be providing more information by January about how to get security updates for Office 365 ProPlus on devices running Windows 7 after support for Windows 7 ends.

      Note: This information also applies to Office 365 Business which is included in business plans such as M365 Business and Office 365 Business Premium, and to desktop versions of Project and Visio.

Download/Install Office

Important

  • If you use Microsoft Project and/or Visio, please make sure to review the compatibility article before installing Office suite.
  • You will need administrator rights to your computer to install any software. If you do not have these rights, contact your local administrator. Also, make sure to update the software after completing the installation - this will ensure that your software is up-to-date for it most important security patches.
  • If you have a previous version of Office installed, please perform a complete uninstall before installing the latest version.
  • OneNote desktop client will no longer be included within Office 365/2019 suite and instead will be a standalone application. If you would like to use OneNote desktop client, review Microsoft's article.

Windows OS

  1. Log into Office 365 Portal using your netid@wisc.edu address and NetID credentials.
  2. Click Install Office button.
  3. Follow the prompts to install the software. You will be prompted to enter your account credentials (NetID/password) to activate the software.
    Note: During the configuration Office/Outlook, If you are prompted to 'add this account to Windows', click skip for now.

Mac OS

  1. Log into the Office 365 portal.
    Note: if you are prompted to sign into your Office 365 email account, enter you NetID@wisc.edu address.
  2. Within the 'My account' screen, click Install Office button.
  3. When prompted, run the installer and continue with the installation/configuration process.
